No one is perfect and that's the beauty of life, plus you can always start over. And starting over doesn't mean a constant in and out with folks or repetitive negative situations. If that's the case then you haven't been doing your life homework nor paying attention to the whispers within. We are here to teach each other and to make each other better, so no lessons are wasted. Time however, is constant and the clocks cannot be turned back to correct mistakes, injuries and should haves. Make the most, you've heard it before and it's still true... Be good to yourself and others.

One of my favorite accent colors is Red. I love the strength of it, and the many emotions it can evoke. The symbolism surrounding Red is often associated with sin, guilt, pain, blood and anger. For me, I prefer the association of lust, passion, love, beauty, and boldness. Red can be an instant mood changer, and a stimulate to the brain. Love that. Red is also a power color and represents confidence. Sometimes you need that extra material blanket of security. Many professionals in the corporate and political arena love the Red power message. Men love the Red power tie and for women the Red power dress, suit, shoe or handbag. Love a Red handbag, a personal favorite. In some cultures Red has it's own meanings and use, from celebrations to representing purity. China uses the color of Red to attract good luck and is often worn by brides. Michelle Obama wore a Red Alexander McQueen dress for the state dinner for President Hu Jintao of China. Very appropriate. However in South Africa, Red represents the color of mourning.

Please note that if you're in the design or advertising business knowing your global symbols and color history is a must. February14th, the designated day in which love is celebrated and expressed between intimate companions. Do you love me, yes or no? How can I count the ways in which I love you. Show me your love with chocolate, flowers or with written words singing your hearts intentions. Is your heart open or closed today? Is their a special somebody that's brings joy to your good mornings and your good nights? Do you need the help of this day to stand up for you, because you have not told that someone how much they mean to you throughout the relationship. Love should be expressed more than once a year. It should be a regular occurrence and it doesn't always need fanfare. However, a little out of the way extra has never made a situation worst.

Love is fluid and free flowing. Love is not painful or disrespectful, this is definitely not love. Love is never-ending, constantly showing up, changing and rearranging. We all have it, this love thing. Sometimes it's an intimate love between lovers or the love we have for family and friends. Whatever your present condition, is your heart open or closed? "But I thought this was love," turned out to be mis-guided love, not the right one love, you make me crazy love, bunny burning love, I can't live without you love, you make me cheat love, one night stand love, these are temporary and short-term loves that sometimes confuses the heart. These are love impersonators. Beware.

Love resides in all of us whether your heart is open or closed. The creator placed it there. Keeping it open and maintained will provide the best experience throughout our lives. Even when an experience presents a challenge but challenges keeps you alert, and the heart needs exercising. Use your heart daily, it's strong. Love and love often. Share it, learn from it, care for it, but don't abuse it or someone else's. Come in peace and keep the light on. Happy Valentine's Day! Tell somebody.

Catch of The Day

The first fish was captured with my camera on the wall of a downtown building. Fishing should be so easy. Right? I would drive pass this fish often and knew I needed to take a photograph. I wanted to get a picture of this before it got removed or before the building was torn down. We tear down a lot of old buildings in this town. It wasn't until pulling over one day with my camera in the car, and having your camera in the car is very key to spontaneity. Otherwise it's a missed moment. So finally, after parking and getting closer to the fish, I realized the body of the fish is constructed with old 45 records. Love it even more. Click.

The last fish was caught by the local fish market, they do that so well. This was a Sheepshead, meaty with a mild flavor. It was baked in butter, garlic, onions, salt and pepper. Lovely. Very simple. Very delicious.

My cousin David had a strong love for family, sports, music and having a good time. But more importantly, sharing that good time with family and friends. Until the very end he spent his remaining days/hours/last breath surrounded by family and friends doing the things he loved most, watching sports, talking trash, and laughing out loud. And when he couldn't speak anymore family and friends remained; his street was lined with cars, the front yard and house packed. Everyone gave back to him what he spent his life giving out. Love.

His taste in music stayed in the 80's because he absolutely loved it. Prince was his favorite. So as a tribute to him, I put together a few songs that represented him, and titled it "David's Last Jam" as a parting/goodbye souvenir CD. Cousin you will be missed...

It's the end of this year, and the beginning of a new one where we get to summarize our living. What worked and what did not work. What was in our best interest and served the greater good or what repeated habit/habits provided a continuation of holding us back. Cleaning out the closet is one of the hardest jobs, but letting go of unnecessary burdens and struggles is so freeing. Mental clutter as well as material clutter are all things that we stuff in a closet to be dealt with later. When does later come? Later is now and now is the perfect time to renew, reflect and refresh. Making this is a daily practice or at least a weekly practice helps to prevent build-up. So, renew you spirit with unclaimed dreams, or make that vision board if you need a visual hands on reminder. Reflect on the order and ways to make what seems impossible, possible. Lastly refresh, never forgetting to breathe through it all. And remember to enjoy yourself and share yourself; we're in this together.

Butternut Squash Lasagna a family first but soon to be a favorite go to dish. We loved this. I roasted the squash instead of boiling it like the recipe called for, this also allowed me to have roasted squash seeds to snack on. This recipe was very involved and a little messy but the taste is award winning, worth the effort. Another vegetarian dish to add to the repertoire, the cheese eating vegetarians in this case. This recipe was inspired by Giada of the Food Network.

Gathering together to share moments together is what we do as humans. Sometimes it's at special occasions, sad occasions or just because we miss the feel of home. Hopefully, we are lucky enough to have come from a place that we can miss and not from a place that causes anxiety or memories of bad experiences. But to commune with those that we call our family, either born into or relationships developed through time, these are the social ingredients that help make us who we are. We need each other in order to thrive. Life should not be lived alone, it should be shared, nurtured, learnt from and passed on. Of course life is not perfect but that's part of the journey of being better. We struggle, we have regrets, misunderstandings, bad experiences, many things that require us to move beyond. Moving is hard sometimes but remaining stuck is equally as hard with the added burden of being a thief of time.

Love and forgiveness are the key. They are very powerful tools and very useful tools. Especially if we need to apply them to ourselves. Oh, and forgiving doesn't mean the continuation of negativity or remaining in a harmful situation. It just means that you are no longer held hostage by the actions or bad choices of another. Self love: if we're not loving ourselves properly, how can we love another properly. Know yourself, it's worth the commitment.

One of my many favorite memories is of my grandmother's pound cakes. These cakes always showed up at church functions, from selling dinners for the church building fund to a Church Tea or Social. Sweet, and soft and often accompanied with punch. Homemade punch and every preparer had their own special blend with ginger ale and pineapple juice providing the base. Pound cakes also made it's way to funerals, family reunions, Daytona Beach trips and train trips to Hartwell, Georgia, wrapped in wax paper along with fried chicken. Pound cake added a little sweetness to any occasion, even sad ones. And just the opposite, a pound cake would show up for your birthday, dedicated to only you. The simple things, and the sweetest things are right down Memory Lane.

So for a second thrill, my very own personal thrill, I decided to experiment with type + image. For the annual meeting announcement, two invites were design because not everyone would be attending the board meeting, some guest would be invited to the reception only. All designs were created to peak interest and get a good turnout. Too many times business invitations are plain and underwhelming with zero wow factor. Designing something a with a little extra makes a lot of difference to the event.

Sade is always stunning and amazing when she graces any cover. Born Helen Folasade Adu, a.k.a. Sade, a soulful, sultry, velvet throat mesmerizer and always leaving us wanting more. Well she has returned and is picking up just were she left off. Singing those love songs, I have survived songs, and love will return songs. I am a soldier of love song. But in the meantime I'm living my life. Love that. Beautiful and mysterious, but making music her own way, in her own timing. Not at all pressed by the music industry, guided only by her Heart, Art and Spirit. At 51 she looks totally fabulous as she prepares to go on tour around the world. Sade, doing it her way but isn't that what we admire about her. The Black frame gave the cover, "the in your face" effect.

Inspiration: A photo montage that began with the woman, striking a pose for the camera. The overall mood was black and white imagery. Then I saw a photograph of lights, then it all made sense. Lights, action, camera. Found another set of lights. One set of lights had the blue green bulbs, that led to an obsession with balancing the last photo with another touch of blue. Found it.

A lovely gift, that only needed a plain gift bag and tissue. The packaging on the products was very beautiful. A pineapple hand wash and a pineapple body scrub, too divine. Just added a card, plus I included a mixtape/cd. The time gods were on my side. In addition, everyone was also asked to bring a dish, so I decided to bring an appetizer. The salmon spread was my selection. Simple to make with cream cheese, red onions, chives, lemon juice, parsley, and arugula. Add baked bagel chips, and black grapes; perfection. It was a wonderful evening with friends.

Séraphine Louis, known as "Séraphine de Senlis" (1864–1942). She was a French painter and painted in what is called the naïve style. Naïve art is considered as art that is simple in appearance and technique, with no formant training. I don't feel this classification justly apply's at all. Séraphine's work is so detailed and very exquisite, she only painted flowers and nature with this repetitive obsession. Is that not called passion? True enough Séraphine was, "self-taught, inspired by her religious faith and by stained-glass church windows and other religious art." Her faith was her passion, and she strongly felt that she was honoring her calling and doing God's work. Some considered her crazy for listening to voices and living her life by this inner calling. We all know that there is a very thin line between genius, madness, and artistic talent. But her gift is obvious. However, this poor woman who barely got by, made her own paint colors from plants and animal that she developed herself, all while doing menial jobs to keep painting. Remarkable. Her life story was represented in the film by Martin Provost, simply titled Séraphine. This was an excellent film and like most artist, her famed has increased with her death. The lucky cities for 2010 included Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York City. To top that each city has a surprise artist that is featured. Too fabulous. Hennessy Artistry Detroit 2010 was amazingly captured by the talented photographer and storyteller, Tafari K. Stevenson-Howard and this is his video. Temporary highs only. What is it about the artist, wanting to be understood but not until death that their gifts are truly seen, appreciated, and respected. Yearning for acceptance by family, friends and society. Many times used and exploited as the flavor of the moment. However, his talent could not be denied.

Basquiat is one of my favorite artist, his works touches the inner most parts of me. The intensity, passion, and conviction of his work, and feelings is brilliantly projected in your face. So original and ahead of his time is what they say now. Gone too soon just the same. However, he left us with a large incredible body of work for us to get to know him a little bit more.

My favorite drive for clearing my head is to take the scenic route and travel to American Beach. It's about a forty-five minute drive. But oh what a drive, the views are fabulous. The joy goes all the way through you from head to toe. This day, I decided to snap a few pics. There was little are no traffic, a perfect moment to experiment. Nature at it's finest. After the drive the end result is the beach, pure heaven, a watery blue heaven, and this is just a tiny taste.

Billie McCray was born in Tuskegee, Alabama and went to college at Tuskegee Institute College and majored in Early Childhood Education. She and her husband celebrated 43 years of marriage January of 2010. They have one child, a daughter, who is fabulously creative herself. The apple story right. Billie has no formal art training but loves guilting and making things from found and discarded items. Fiber art began with her husband having a fondness for the work of Memphis Woods, and wanting a piece for their home. Billie looked at Memphis work and decided she could do that. Warrior woman attitude and the rest is history. Billie uses piping rope, broken jewelry, tons of fabric, African beads, thrown away handbags, you name it. She has an eye, natural talent and self determination, combining that with a sewing machine and hand stitching. Her attention to detail is more than obvious. I had the joy of seeing her work today at American Beach Community Center in celebration of MaVynee Oshun Betsch, better known as the 'The Beach Lady'. Billie's work is gorgeous. Check it.

Who doesn't love choices, and delicious choices that even makes the toes wiggle. At the top there is a seafood salad with Mayport shrimp and succulent oysters, resting nicely on a bed of mixed greens, red onions and a horseradish sauce. Heavenly. The middle is fruit and nuts. The sweetest, darkest, grapes that pop in your mouth, followed with cantaloupe, and almonds. A simple breakfast or a lovely snack. Last, there is the vegetable slider with portabella mushrooms, peppers, mixed greens, red onions, and goat cheese. Total yum.

A Man Named Pearl: His Art, His Garden

Pearl Fryar a self taught artist, the son of sharecroppers, who has educated himself on the art of topiary gardening. "Not knowing ahead of time that something is supposed to be impossible often makes it possible to achieve," according to Pearl. His art for gardening all began with him wanting to win the Yard of the Month award. He finally won, and was also the first African-American in the community of Bishopville, SC to do so. Now his garden is seen by people from all around the world, making his home a tourist destination, and simultaneously revitalizing the community of Bishopville. He has been featured in Art in America, PBS Victory Garden, Garden Design, CBS Sunday Morning, Fine Gardening, Charleston Magazine and the New York Times. Included with that recognition is a documentary titled, "A man Named Pearl." This documentary is truly inspiring, and is a testimony to hard work, dedication, commitment, and passion. Love it. Mr. Fryar ignored the racial undertones of his community, and instead found his purpose. With his message and personal motto of, "Love, Peace, and Goodwill," he is showing us all, how to live. Valerie June, singer, songwriter, and self-taught guitarist. Singing the sounds of her soul, and living by the calling in her heart. To create her music. For Valerie, her special blend, or her personal style of music, she refers as, "Organic Moonshine Roots Music." This sound is tied to her family roots which began in West Tennessee. She is an emerging new artist making her way onto the blues stage but doing it her way, sometimes through trial and error. In addition, understanding that the music industry is forever changing, and more creative ways are necessary to make dreams come true. Valerie has partnered with Kickstarter to raise funds and to record a new album called "Manifest." This means of raising money is more grassroots, and community collective with fan participation. We all make investments to one thing or another, this is an opportunity to invest in a dream. My first initiation with this singer was through her hair, massive like a lioness mane. Beautiful to behold. Then I heard her voice and her story; unique and captivating. When I first saw this particular angel in her collection, of course I paused, and picked it up. She told me her story behind it. Time For Lunch Again

Lunch is one of the personal things that I do for my family. I really enjoy it. The added bonus is, it enhances my creativity. Coming up with new presentations, just like in graphic design, it's a foodie delight. Texture, color, and shape, all stimulating to the senses. "Sandwich art," is what I call it. However, it is best that these "art projects" or lunches get made at night. I'm usually awake, up until 3:00 a.m. most times. It is at these hours that I am at peace with no distractions, and my imagination just flows ever so freely. However, mornings are not my best time, and lunches made in the morning, well, not so good. It's not joyful to me at all during those morning hours between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Oh well, such is life. By the way, the peach was juicy and sweet. So good. A perfect complement to the sandwich.
